Rory Adams

Senior Music Therapist and Clinical Supervisor

Rory’s love of music as a means of interaction and connection grew from his experiences of family gatherings that always seemed to involve singing songs, reciting poetry, and telling stories.

While working for a schools-based initiative in Dublin in the 1990’s (the internationally based Yehudi Menuhin MUS-E project) Rory was one of a team of artists providing arts based experiences for disadvantaged children at risk of social exclusion or other societal problems. These first-hand experiences of the ‘non-music’ benefits of engaging in music activities eventually led Rory to study Music Therapy.

Having worked as a community musician in both community and educational settings Rory qualified as a music therapist in 2005 at the Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff. He followed this in 2010 by completing a Masters programme in Research Methodologies with the Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge.

Initially working extensively with children and adults who live with autism, and with those living with other disabilities, Rory currently provides trauma informed music based interventions for individuals and groups in adult mental health contexts.

His work includes a diverse range of music therapy programmes in several acute in-patient psychiatric services and also in community mental health settings such as day hospitals, day centres, residential rehabilitation centres, addiction centres, and psychiatry of later life services.
